SELF-SUFFICIENCY

Self-reliance, also referred to as self-sufficiency, not only helps you save money but also protects the environment and you from life's ups and downs.

Less self-sufficiency has been the result of changes in society and the economy during the last 100 years. Since production is becoming more centralised and globalised, practically anything may be purchased already made, but it is unlikely that it was produced locally. People have generally lost the time and abilities to be independent due to growing specialisation, both parents working, and increased work-life constraints. People are time poor but money rich, therefore they would hire people to perform things for them that they would normally do themselves.

Even for necessities like food and clothing, we are becoming more and more reliant on foreign nations or regions within our own countries. It is far better in the long run for people to be resilient and support themselves within their local communities due to rising fuel prices, the need to minimise glasshouse gas emissions, and the need to safeguard the environment.

Anyone who has grown their own veggies or manufactured their own clothes will tell you that self-sufficiency is unexpectedly fulfilling. It offers us inherently rewarding benefits including a sense of accomplishment, self-worth, and self-confidence.
